I’ve attempted using the schematic-file-converter from github to read a gerber downloaded from Upverter, but the reader fails with an exception. Is the converter current? Is there a better workflow as I want to use the autorouting?

Unfortunately the converter on Github hasn’t been updated in a while - I think it’s been a few years now. Unfortunately, we haven’t had the time to continue working on it.
For export, I’d suggest trying the Pads netlist format. I don’t know if Eagle supports it, but a number of other CAD tools out there are able to import that format.
